Objective Driven AI

I read quite a radical article about the Chief AI scientist at Meta, Yann LeCun, following a keynote speech that he made at Meta AI day in London.

He calls for a move away from Generative AI and a shift towards Objective-Driven AI

In fact his words about Generative AI were: “It Really Sucks”

It is worth qualifying Yann LeCunn’s credentials. He has spent many years in the field of AI and machine learning and his words comes from one of the most knowledgeable and qualified standpoints that there is within this sector.

What this means too me, albeit crudely, is that Generative AI is often just a “hope for the best” lottery, where it may work on a few keywords and you end up with things like psychotic images, and meaningless text, based on whatever the app decides to generate.

Objective driven AI, on the other hand, is where a task is set, with meaningful goals and then something much more useful can be aimed for and presented back to you. Something that I had always hoped for when I first heard about AI.

Put more eloquently, LeCunn is pushing for a seismic shift towards Objective-Driven AI. One that aims to fundamentally redefine artificial intelligence, transforming it from merely a pattern-recognition tool, into a technology of far greater value for the human race, capable of understanding, predicting, and interacting with the world.

Personally I am a huge fan of this initiative. Hopefully, people will get behind Yann LeCun’s words and we might then stop seeing the millions of nonsensical AI generated articles everywhere on Social media.

Let’s stop playing around with AI and start to do some good with it.
