What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is simply the name associated with a website. There can be no two identical website names. Like IP addresses they are all unique.
Domain Names usually consists two parts. The top-level (TLD) and the second-level domain (SLD).
The top-level part is located to the right of the dot. The most well known examples of the TLD being .com, .net, .org. , .eu, .global etc.
The second-level domain is the part that is located to the left of the dot. For example, the SLD in 'greatwebsite.com' is 'greatwebsite'.
TLDs can be generic such as .net, .com, .org etc or they can also be geographic such as .us, .de, .jp, .uk, .pl, .cymru .ie, etc
To get a to a live working website, there are usually three stages:
Domain name is secured
Website is created
Website is hosted.
