About POP3 & IMAP Overview
Email - Choosing POP3 or IMAP?
When you set up an email address in an email client, with most hosts you have the option of setting up your client email software, with either IMAP or POP 3 settings.
Both systems are just different ways for you to connect to the mail server. They both give the same end results, enabling an efficient email service on suitable software or App, installed on your Laptop, Smartphone or Tablet.
But depending on your main ways of accessing your e-mail, you may find one is more effective for you than the other.
IMAP is short for Internet Message Access Protocol.
POP3 is short for Post Office Protocol.
Here is a quick comparison:
IMAP
If you access your emails from various devices, such as your computer, tablet or smartphone, then IMAP may be the best option.
- All your emails will be stored on the email server, enabling you to access them from anywhere.
- Your data is synchronized, so that your emails and associated folders will always have the same status on all your devices.
- Your data remains secure, even if your device is defective or lost.
POP3
If you always access your emails from the same device, with only limited access to the Internet, then POP3 may offer more advantages.
- All your emails are downloaded on to your device.
- You can also access your emails offline, when there is no internet.
- Your emails and folders are not synchronized between your different devices.
It is fair to say however, that nowadays, in the world of ever increasing, good quality Internet connectivity, in these areas, many people are choosing IMAP, as the most flexible and secure way forward.
