What is a Unicorn Company?
A Unicorn is classed as a privately held start up company, that is valued at over $1 billion.
The term Unicorn was used as a comparison to the mythical creature of the same name, as gaining this status was deemed almost as impossible as seeing the actual creature. When the term was first coined back in 2013, this huge early financial achievement was much rarer than it is today.
There are now also "Super Unicorns" such as:
Decacorns – startups with a value of $10 billion
Hectacorns - startups with a value of $100 billion
