About Data Warehouses - A brief overview
What is a Data Warehouse?
This is a type of Data storage / Data management system, which can be used for daily analytics and ongoing business intelligence.
Data warehouses, as their name suggests, are designed as a storage for large, bulk quantities of data, that is typically going to be used on a daily or frequent basis and the same data may be referred to often. Historic data can be stored, referenced, integrated, cleaned or archived.
The type of data will usually come from recurring sources, such as Computer and Server hard drive backups, Log files, Transactions and also other tangible data, such as customer and employee data, bought ledger, sales ledger, payrolls and various other applications.
The information from Data Warehouses becomes more and more useful as time goes on and the shelves continue to fill up from various sources. It enables business analysts to then extract and use the data to look at various historic trends, by extracting useful business insights from raw data and then to enable appropriate decision-making.
